The Pharos Tarot images invoke a liminal or hypnagogic state. They illustrate how the Hebrew letters that correspond to each Major Arcana card, also correspond to individual parts of a lighthouse system. The images are as if one encountered this information in a dream, having have the same strange and surreal suggestive perspectives as the dream world.
Alexander the Great had a dream over 2300 years ago of an old, bearded man (the Hermit?), who recited these words: “Now there is an island, in the much dashing sea in front of Egypt. Pharos is what men call it.” Alexander then chose the island of Pharos as the site for his city of Alexandria. Alexandria had an ancient lineage and a visionary outlook. The city became famous for the Hermetic Arts, the library of Alexandria – and the Pharos lighthouse, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
Pharos Tarot is named after that lighthouse. It travels the color scales through light using the medium of watercolor. Watercolor is known for its luminosity as the pigments are diffused in water with a transparent effect, allowing the light of the white paper to shine through. Water and light merge to create the color spectrum.
It’s also named for the fabled Pharos lighthouse because tarot is a guidance system, designed to shed light on obscured and foggy situations.
Pharos Tarot Majors are available in three versions of an extra-large Majors only set:
- Bordered with both standard (Thoth based) titles and alternate titles - Lux occultatum edition of only 273 copies SOLD OUT
- bottom black border with Roman numerals and alternate titles Golden Dawn King scale - Fiat lux edition of only 231 copies AVAILABLE
- completely borderless with alternate titles only - Ad lucem edition of only 247 copies SOLD OUT
Each version comes with 22 Majors and two alternate Majors. Each version has DIFFERENT alternate Majors!
The alternate titles are unique to Pharos, and reference the motif of the Lighthouse dissembled into parts.
Cards are Extra Large sized, 4x6.25 inches, perfect for your tarot altar.
This is a very limited edition, and it's likely these won't be repeated. Each version had under 300 copies, numbered and signed by the artist.
This package includes the 25 card deck banded in metallic paper plus the signature card, packaged in a sturdy metallic card stock folder banded and embossed with the Pharos logo - an Orphic Egg. A copy of the Orphic hymn to Protogonos is included.
